Retaining walls are both structural and aesthetic. As Melbourne retaining wall builders, we build walls in timber, concrete, and natural stone, properly footed, drained, and finished to last. From simple level changes to full terraced gardens, we handle the whole scope.

Finish & Integration
Retaining walls do two things: they hold back soil and reshape a sloped or uneven site into something usable, and when done right, they become a defining feature of the garden. We build in timber sleepers, concrete block, natural stone, and gabion to suit the site conditions, the design brief, and the load requirements. Every wall is installed with correct drainage behind it, the right footing depth for the height, and finishes that coordinate with the rest of the landscape rather than looking like an afterthought.

A retaining wall has to manage soil, water and ground pressure while also looking right in the garden. We assess the height, site levels, access and surrounding structures before recommending a material. Timber sleepers can bring warmth to a garden renovation, while concrete block, stone and gabion walls can create a more substantial architectural finish.
Drainage is part of the wall, not an optional extra. We allow for drainage behind the structure, suitable footing and clean transitions at the top and base. On sloped Melbourne blocks, a series of smaller terraces can sometimes create more useful garden areas than one tall wall, with planting, steps and paving integrated into the level change.
We can build a retaining wall as a standalone structural landscape project or coordinate it with garden beds, turf, planting and paving. For a complete response to an uneven backyard, see our Full Landscape Construction service.

The curved recycled-brick wall forms part of an entry garden, with feature planting and Dichondra groundcover spilling over its face. The brickwork and planting are designed as one composition. This finished project is not a standard structural detail to copy: each wall still needs its own assessment of levels, loads and drainage.
Read the Newport retaining-wall story and material-planning guide →We build timber sleeper walls, concrete block (Besser and Adbri), and natural stone walls depending on height, load requirements, and the aesthetic of the project.
In Victoria, retaining walls over 1m high typically require a building permit. We advise on requirements during the initial site consultation.
Yes. Retaining walls are a core part of how we work with sloped sites, creating level usable areas, preventing erosion, and improving overall drainage.
A properly built concrete block or natural stone wall lasts 30-50 years. Timber sleeper walls typically last 15-25 years depending on species and ground conditions.
